The recruitment rate has shown 18% as 33 applicants for a total quota of 180 in fifty-five training hospitals in 2023. Crisis situation on the medical care system of the department of pediatrics and adolescents
The analytical result from Medigate News on fifty-five training hospitals with quotas for residents of the department of pediatrics and adolescents in the first half of next year, the recruitment rate has shown 18% with 33 people having applied for a total capacity of 180.
This is impacting on our society that there's no applicants for the department of pediatrics and adolescents in 44 out of 55 training hospitals.
Even that Asan Medical Center was the only one that has filled the quota of residents for the department of pediatrics and adolescents among leading big five hospitals in 10 applicants out of 8.
The recruitment rate of Seoul National University Hospital has shown 70% as 10 applicants out of 14, and the recruitment rate was 50% with 3 applicants for a total capacity of 6 in Samsung Medical Center. Catholic Medical Center was 10% with 1 out of 13, and there are no applicants in Severance Hospital for a total capacity of 11.
In the procession of zero applicants in the Seoul area, Kangbuk Samsung Hospital has recruited 2 residents for a total quota of 2, and 1 of them applied for the selection of 3 residents in Hanyang University Seoul Hospital. 1 person has applied respectively for the recruitment of 2 residents in Soonchunhyang University Hospital Seoul, and for 3 people in Korea University Guro Hospital.
The applicants for resident in most of the training hospitals in metropolitan and local areas were counted as zero excepting Ajou University Hospital, Jeonbuk National University Hospital and Chungbuk National University Hospital. Ajou University Hospital has recruited 2 residents for a total quota of 5, Jeonbuk National University Hospital had 1 person out of 4, and Chungbuk National University Hospital had 1 out of 3.
Regarding disturbing results, Prof. Yeongho Rha (Kyung Hee University Hospital), president of the Korean Pediatrics Society has expressed his views on the heavy-intensity working environment of residents, further uncertainty due to low birth rates, and the burden of medical disputes.
He has explained “Pediatrics treats many severe diseasesas an essential medical care. The tertiary advanced general hospitals are running neonatal intensive care units and pediatric intensive care units. In addition, the workload intensity of residents in most training hospitals is much more intensive than that of other departments due to night clinics for the emergency room. If the rate of application continues to drop for a two or three-year period, the medical care system of the department of pediatrics and adolescents could implode. We are sending this crisis situation of the department of pediatrics and adolescents to the Ministry of Health and Welfare continuously but there are no visible achievements yet.”
He also has warned as follows “It's not a matter of simply difficulties of operating a hospital due to a lack of residents. It may face a suspension situation for the medical care system due to the collapse of the department of pediatrics and adolescents.”
